Queens

On Rikers Island, an inmate was found dead from a drug overdose inside his cell, making him the 10th prisoner to perish inside one of the few facilities left after a law the city council cronies enacted and the current mayor signed decreed that the island be shut down permanently.

Also on Rikers Island, a clerical fugazi allowed a convicted burglar who was sentenced for 20 months for robbing three small businesses to run free and was found and re-detained back on his hunting grounds in Staten Island.

Again on Rikers Island, an inmate stole a corrections bus and crashed it into a prison wall after the C.O. driver left the keys in the ignition while he was processing paperwork with another C.O.

And again on Rikers Island, an inmate who was gang affiliated and convicted of murder was found dead in his cell following a transfer from the prison barge docked in the Bronx.

And again on Rikers Island, three inmates brutally beat down another inmate inside his cell because they thought he was in a rival gang.

And again on Rikers Island, an inmate saw a shitlib city council crony and threw toilet water at him from behind a glass partition.

And again in Rikers Island, three inmates ganged up on a maintenance worker and stole his watch, sneakers and smokes as one of them stuck a shiv to his side.

And again on Rikers Island, an inmate who was serving time for shooting up a speakeasy nite club in Williamsburg where he sprayed five people at their legs was found to be the hit-and run driver who ran over and killed a woman with a fancy car in Ozone Park by a catholic school and got charged with murder. So let’s decarcerate him.

And again on Rikers Island, a C.O. caught an inmate with a weapon on him while he was doing a work detail and then the convict punched him the face and broke his jaw while he tried to bring him back to a higher security level area. The inmate was arraigned for the homicide of his girlfriend.

Since the city closed facilities on the prison complex island, two of them that had medical clinics, to rush it’s eventual transfer to four tower prisons in four boroughs sans S.I. that won’t fully materialize until 2027, a fifth of the C.O.’s have been calling in sick and the remaining guards have been working triple shifts trying to prevent daily insurrections and attacks by unruly inmates. Under staffing has been so rife, inmates have taken over their duties logging prisoners on days when they go 24 hours without C.O. supervision.

What was always a common occurrence inside the prisons, gang beatdowns are even more pronounced as inmates film the ultraviolence and post them on social media sites like TikTok and also rap videos with inmates flashing cash and high end hooch. The drug trade has also raged out of control because there are not enough C.O.’s to search them.

While the Blaz deliberately stalled into visiting Rikers for weeks after being hammered with questions daily about it and by slightly acknowledging the crisis he’s been ignoring for mostly the last 4 years.., NY State senators and assembly officials were demanding to visit the prison and see the humanitarian crisis for themselves. But as is wont of the Blaz, he fabricated a hill of bullshit by citing his executive authority can only allow them to visit the prisons or any government building. But since New York government officials have the privileged right to enter any government building they want, Blaz’s dropped his pathetic obstruction and the senators and assembly people went the next day.

And what a day it was. As they all assembled at a podium in front of Rikers giant welcoming sign on the corner of Hazen St. and 19th Ave, young women elected officials one by one furiously railed about the horrid and hazardous conditions and environment during their tour of the wretched facilities. One of them even claimed she saw an inmate attempted suicide by hanging himself in his cell (although no one happened to see any impromptu gang violence or regular drug dealing when they were inside there).

Although they acknowledged the maltreatment the C.O.’s and workers at Rikers are getting from the city (but not from the recidivist violent inmates), the Corrections Dept. union leader held a rally right near them and confronted the liberal collective right after they were calling for the general release of the entire prison population. Yet the two groups found solidarity in their abject and apt criticism of current mayor de Blasio, who cowardly tried to prevent this tour from happening. Rikers workers continued to hold protests against the mayor and the crony he hired as interim Dept of Corrections commissioner to oversee the prison complex as it got worse under his feeble supervision during it’s draw down transition to tower prisons that are a half decade away, who a high brass C.O. labeled as an asshole puppet of the Blaz. The asshole puppet lived up to his reputation by proclaiming that fixing Rikers is impossible because the recurring violence behind bars is unstoppable mainly because of absent C.O.’s although depriving the prisoners of basis services. Besides losing medical services because of the loss of clinics from two recently closed facilities, inmates no longer have recreational activities or even access to the library.

As the pressure mounted following the Rikers protest, The Blaz continued to avoid Rikers and evade questions about touring the prison complex even though he was holding his recent silly city hall in your borough week in Queens, where Rikers happens to call it’s home. Following a presser teasing when he will visit, he finally went to Rikers immediately after his daily variety show press briefing that very day and evidently he made sure he avoided all the corridors where thousands of inmates were located and even avoided the C.O.’s on the floor who do the risky and bold work trying to keep the jail secure for visitors like the soft elitist mayor of NYC, while they weren’t even getting paid for the triple shifts they were induced to take. All the dilapidated conditions and human excrement were suddenly scoured clean and painted over and his crony asshole puppet commissioner had all the inmates shuttled to another intake facility that resembled a medieval goolag with the maggots and their own shit just to placate the realities of the prison the mayor only chooses to see, despite the known risk of causing a superspreader area because of the congregate setting. Another thing that made the Blaz’s Rikers tour a cakewalk was that he recently deployed 100 cops to fill work as C.O.’s to the island a few days earlier. If not for the anarchy that has overtaken the jails, this would be another misuse of city safety services the Blaz selfishly exploited with his undeserved privilege as NYC’s Mayor.

When confronted with a question about his pussy tour of Rikers and his deliberate avoidance of engaging with C.O.’s and prisoners who have to work and live under the decrepit conditions resulting from his complicit insouciance that purposely led to them, the Blaz feebly responded with the most heinous missive that he’s ever defecated out of his big faceanus:

“I don’t need to be reminded of something I already know”

Not only is this cold blooded and tone deaf statement a confirmation of his wanton arrogant avoiding of C.O.s and inmates, it’s also monstrously inhumane, being that he knows and has practically accepted what a shithole the prisons are and how the internationally renowned humanitarian crisis exacerbated under his indifference and there was a point when he decided he was going to let it rot. Surely right when he got re-elected. It’s also the Blaz’s most hilarious self-own, since that stupidly haughty statement can apply to every other issue and crisis that has turned into a bigger mountain of shit under his watch, like Vision Zero, affordable housing, and the city’s sewer system that crapped out and flooded the streets and highways of Queens, Kings and Boogie Down counties. Plus anyone can apply it to the mayor himself in casual conversation.

“Man, de Blasio is such a fucktard dickhead”

“I don’t need to be reminded of what I already know cuz”

Now that the Blaz has finally made no bones for being unaccountable for Rikers Island, it’s inmates and security because of he already knows how fucked up it is there, he continues to blame the court system for making it harder to get violent criminals off the streets that have led to rise in felonies in his city, accusing them of being too slow to process cases while discounting the city’s court buildings under his purview that are still under shoddy conditions and not safe to distance from COVID-19/Delta Variant spread. But this wouldn’t be a problem if the borough district D.A.’s weren’t dismissing thousands of criminal cases because of the 10 month old bail reform laws that has sprung over 6,500 perpetrators because of the state assembly’s re-categorizations of the severity of the crimes committed. (Or is that re-imagining). And thousands more will be released because of the humanitarian crisis the Blaz, Governor Kathy, the city council cronies, and the state and assembly fauxgressives are complicit with for their ill-written bail reform and their asinine advocacy legislation for Rikers closure, acting as useful idiots for rapacious developers chomping at the bit for all that vast real estate on the ground and in the ether. All for collective regressive effort to close Rikers Island by any means necessary is clearly having an impact on the streets and on the minds of recidivist criminals and gangbangers practically rejoicing at the decarceration culture being induced on the public from fauxgressive politicians and social media pundits as teenagers are getting shot and killed on the streets where these elites fear to tread.

While he’s telling people off for reminding him of what he already knows, he then tries to remind everyone about dubious drops in shootings from the last year in certain NYPD enclaves while blowing off how shootings have doubled and tripled in other enclaves. As the Summer of Blaz and September ended, a total of 1,384 people got shot on the streets, already passing last years total with another 3 months left in this blood stained year. And if this isn’t offensive and repulsive enough, Jizzoner’s response to all this violence and crime he has been blocking from his brain for the last two years is to hire more municipal workers to NYPD precincts to greet victims of crimes looking to file reports or citizens looking to visit friends and relatives on lockdown because of the perception of the crabby cop behind the desk who won’t help them. The twisted irony of this idiotic program is it’s coming from a motherfucker who’s been the shittiest and surliest host of NYC for 8 years; who doesn’t even deign to greet C.O.’s and prisoners after being browbeaten to by his establishment fauxgressive Democrat party peers. So instead of telling precinct desk cops to be more cordial and informative to his constituents, he spends 5.7 million dollars to put a bunch of B to do their jobs for them.

This abomination reign of de Blasio can’t decompose soon enough.

But that was fortunately kiboshed because of the investigations of the lowlife creep’s nursing home death and pandemic novel profiteering and sexual harassment scandals, the latter which forced him to resign and that was that.

There is still no update about how this apocalyptic blaze started. And Queens is still burning.

In Mariners Harbor, a man got shot to death by a teenage male in a broad daylight gang related attack. The victim was expecting the birth of his third child.

In Huguenot, a man ambushed a woman jogging by a high school and robbed her cellphone at gunpoint.

In Prince’s Bay, a man stalked another man to his home and tapped on his window with a knife to intimidate him and then refused to give it to cops who were called to defuse the situation.

In Castleton Corners, four men jumped another man on the sidewalk and held him up at gunpoint and knifepoint in broad daylight and robbed his backpack containing 35 large in cash.

In Port Richmond, a man flipping car handles on the street got lucky and found one car’s door was left open and he stole $2,000 and $120 bag of weed. The NYPD now has to report marijuana as stolen property because it’s legal, which is hilarious.

Also in Port Richmond, a man burglarized thousands of dollars worth of tools from garages, sheds and trucks and sold them on the street because he needed the money.

Again in Port Richmond, two young men carjacked a Chinese food delivery man with a BB gun that resembled a glock. The two thieves got pursued by the cops and the driver wound up hitting a man riding a bike after running two red lights while trying to get away.

And again in Port Richmond, a man stuck up a man with a switchblade knife and got nabbed by cops who caught him possessing heroin.

And again in Port Richmond, an argument between two men on the street escalated when one of them pulled out a box cutter and the other wielded an ax to settle their dispute. The man with the ax had the advantage, managing to leave cuts on his foe’s hands.

In Grymes Hill, cops raided an apartment suspected of drug dealing and arrested four men and a woman after they found two 9mms, hundreds of painkillers and nearly 10 large in cash.

In Tompkinsville, a man stole a designer bag and sunglasses worth two grand that he easily snatched from a car with the door left open.

At a Sanitation Dept. site, current mayor de Blasio held a publicity stunt to show what tough guy and authoritarian he thinks he is ordering the NYPD to demolished a bunch of dirtbikes, ATV’s and motorcycles with a bulldozer in a pathetic p.s.a. tweet.

The following day, an on-duty cop in full uniform rode on saddleback on one of those dirt bikes at a parade in Greenpoint.

Then a few days after that embarrassing optic, a gang of dirt bike riders and ATV drivers monopolized the streets of Williamsburg.

MTA Survey Confirms Commuters Fears Of Daily Subway Crime And Violence, de Blasio Calls It Fear Mongering Lies

NY Daily News

Fear of crime and harassment in New York City subways is keeping many New Yorkers out of the system even as COVID-19 restrictions start to loosen, according to a survey released Monday by the MTA.

Roughly 36% of straphangers who relied on the subway before the pandemic said they “are not using transit because of crime and harassment,” said the survey, which drew on answers from roughly 33,000 riders between March 15 to March 28.

Subway turnstiles clocked 2 million trips on Thursday for the first time since March 16, 2020, when schools, restaurants and other entertainment venues across the five boroughs began to close as the city became the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak.

Ridership remains about 65% lower than the 5.6 million subway trips recorded each day before the pandemic as unemployment in the city remains high and most offices remain closed.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s new survey says 73% of riders who haven’t returned are “very concerned about crime and harassment” on transit, while 76% also cited “health safety” on the subway as a major fear.

“We know that if our riders feel safe from crime and safe from COVID, they will come back to transit and back to the city,” said MTA spokeswoman Abbey Collins. “We are throwing every resource at continually tackling these issues to keep breaking ridership milestones day after day as New York reopens.”

NY Post

Mayor Bill de Blasio took a shot at the MTA Tuesday, claiming the agency is “discouraging” ridership after its release of a survey highlighting commuter safety concerns.

Hizzoner vented his frustration with the agency during a subway ride with reporters in Upper Manhattan, insisting the mode of transportation is safe, citing the recent addition of 644 cops to its patrols.

“Look, the MTA should be telling people it’s right to come back, not discouraging them. Because regular everyday New Yorkers know that the subways are safe,” de Blasio said.

“I’d urge the MTA to work with us — not put down their own subways, but actually promote their own subways,” he railed.

According to a March survey from the transit agency, 72 percent of over 25,000 active subway and bus riders said they were “very concerned” over crime and harassment during the commute.

The survey showed just 26 percent were “satisfied” with “safety from crime and harassment on trains” — a 15.1 percent dip from September.

Interim Transit President Sarah Feinberg used survey’s findings to reiterate her call for a beefed up NYPD presence in the transit system.

But de Blasio on Tuesday argued there are already enough cops patrolling the subways.

“There’s no question,” the mayor responded when asked if 644 additional officers is enough. “It’s a huge show of force.”

Rather than expose its perceived shortfalls, de Blasio said the MTA should celebrate its successes.

“They need to talk about what’s working — because the subways are cleaner than they’ve ever been. That’s great! That’s a good thing,” he said.

Sage advice from The Blaz again, it’s better to reinforce optics than to acknowledge problems and try to fix them. Just like with his continuing demented response to the pandemic, he has no concern for the safety of his constituents.

What a  bastard.

The cops tore up the woman’s nephew’s bedroom wall and  found was about a few grams of weed. This means the NYPD are still using the same policing method that killed Breonna Taylor a year ago and did this right when Albany was in the well-publicized process of legalizing pot.

In Pomonok, an argument between two men over an available apartment held at an open house sale escalated when one of them took out a gun and shot the other in the ass. Wonder if the apartment was one of those “affordable” ones.

On Rikers Island, a convict who previously served time for killing two men and was awaiting trial for a  shooting murder a few months earlier was set free from a clerical error following a court hearing where he cursed out a judge and he was released after the time on the contempt charge got served. The fugitive did not have bail set for him because of the severity of his crime. Corrections sat on this horrifying information for 12 hours before they notified de Blasio’s NYPD. A deputy warden and four C.O.s got suspended for the drastic miscue.

A week later, another murder suspect was set free from Rikers because of another clerical error that stemmed from reducing the bail for a felony gun possession charge to $1.00 and classifying his felony murder charge as ROR, Allowing him to get Released from the prison On his own Recognizance. Fortunately for the city and society, the felon turned himself.

The other suspected killer fugitive is still running free despite de Blasio’s confidence about his recapture.

Also on Rikers Island, a prisoner serving time for avoiding to pay over $85,000 in child support got mistakenly released on a clerical error. The convict is also COVID-19 positive and took the metrocard and took NYC Transit and the LIRR home to his sister’s house in Suffolk. Even though he’s supposed to remain in quarantine under captivity for another week.

Again on Rikers Island, two inmates associated with the Bloods got into a brawl inside their cell then they both attacked and beat down a C.O. when he tried to break them up.

And again on Rikers Island, an inmate was found dead with his head jammed inside a handcuff port outside of a clinical room and another inmate committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell with a linen cloth.

And again on Rikers Island, a C.O. got into a fight with two of his supervising officers who were trying to force him to work a third shift at the prison after they shut the cage on him when he was trying to go home.

And again on Rikers Island, 13 inmates from the Bloods engaged in five attacks on 11 C.O.’s in a 7 day span starting with two gangbangers attacked a C.O. inciting a prison riot that led to 4 C.O.’s. Another ambush got initiated when one of the prisoners accessed a control room and opened the doors for his fellow inmates, giving them the opportunity to beat the shit out of 4 C.O.’s.

And again on Rikers Island, a prisoner serving time for avoiding to pay over $85,000 in child support got mistakenly released on a clerical error. The convict is also COVID-19 positive and took the metrocard and took NYC Transit and the LIRR home to his sister’s house in Suffolk. Even though he’s supposed to remain in quarantine under captivity for another week.

Has de Blasio, Speaker Cojo and the NY Council fauxgressive cronies ever given the thought that the reason Rikers is making C.O.’s work triple shifts is because solitary confinement has been cancelled and the only way to tamp down violence and keep order is to keep C.O.’s on duty for every minute and second that way they can justify these new supposed progressive policies? Even though it’s clearly not working? Even Jeff Bezos lets his Amazon FFC employees go home.

And while this FUBAR management is going on at Rikers, where is the NYC Jails Commissioner? Whose conspicuous absence after de Blasio put her on medical leave following the release of a fugitive killer that’s still on the loose has made her virtually unobtainable for comment?

Manhattan

In Hell’s Kitchen, a man looked directly at a 65-year-old woman walking on the sidewalk and kicked her in the chest and then stomped on her head three more times as she lied on the pavement in front of luxury apartment building, as the doorman closed the door as she writhed in pain on the ground while the man yelled at her that she didn’t belong here because of her race, which he presumed was Chinese, but she was really a Philipino woman. When the coast was clear, two building employees went outside and aided the woman although the NYPD said that no 911 calls were made after the attack despite the luxury building owners claims. The lunatic then threatened another man with a knife who tried to stop him from getting away according to a witness.

The man got arrested at a hotel homeless shelter in 3 blocks south from where he pummeled the woman in broad daylight. The city placed him at that hotel after he served a 17-year-sentence for murdering his mother by stabbing her in the chest three times with a kitchen knife at her home in the Bronx. He was released on parole in late 2019 after being rejected two times the prior two years.

This barbaric attack was enough to garner enough local and national media  for Mayor de Blasio to give a token condemnation for violence towards Asian people, which exceedingly rose in the city he runs after he announced an undercover cop task force to catch bias violence against Asians in the act and demanded his constituents to report people even on the presumption they said slurs resembling bigotry against Asians. Which shows that everything the Blaz touches to try to stem crises of any kind, he exacerbates them

The psycho is now incarcerated and denied bail.

Also in Hell’s Kitchen, during a Black Lives Matter protest, a man got his face lacerated when a demonstrator smashed the plexiglass window of a restaurant shanty while he was eating.

And again in Hell’s Kitchen, a man ran down the sidewalk and clotheslined a 73-year-old to the pavement in broad daylight.

In Harlem, a man brutally beat his 10-year-old stepson to death inside their apartment at the St. Nicholas’ Houses. On the day before the murder, cops were sent to the building to respond to a 911 call describing a man yelling threats and banging on a wall When they arrived to the source of the disturbance, they waited in a hallway and left after 12 minutes after allegedly not hearing anything and getting a voicemail trying to contact the person who notified them. The next time the NYPD sent cops to return to the building to investigate another domestic violence call, the boy was lying dead in a bathtub hours after his stepfather threatened to beat him worse than he did the day before.

During the boy’s life, the NYC ACS were regular visitors to this household, as early as when he was a baby when his mother was charged for neglect. His stepfather had prior  domestic violence arrests for beating up his mother and also assaulted another woman in front of her 3 kids. The autopsy of his final beating of his stepson found internal injuries to his organs and broken ribs.

Also in Harlem, a man shot at two men inside a bodega after he accused them of starting at him and when one of them threw a tin dish of food he was eating at him. Then the gunman and his friend rode away on scooters.

Where the fuck is Thrive, Co-Mayor Chirlie?

Again in East Harlem, two gang members got shot in the middle of the street.

And again in East Harlem, a man shot another man to death on a street corner,  then he got into a car with another man and fled the scene of the murder. Then they were pursued by the cops who heard the shots nearby and got into a high speed chase with them on the FDR drive. The two men abandoned the car in Midtown and fled on foot. The cops managed to arrest the passenger but not the driver and found the murder weapon on the ground.

And again in East Harlem, an app-food delivery man got shot to death in a playground after he tried to stop his killer from stealing his e-bike while he was about to eat lunch. Robberies of ebikes have seen a massive surge during the year long pandemic, mostly off of gig working undocumented immigrants who make about 60 bucks a day and are usually too scared to go to the cops to report them stolen, making them easy prey for lowlife thieves. For some reason, the delivery guys have to purchase their own bikes even though they work for tech companies that make billions of dollars and don’t pay as much taxes as regular businesses in the city.

In Midtown, a man driving a commercial van blacked out and rear-ended another car and caused it to crash into a restaurant shanty, the van driver then collided into a fruit stand set up under a building scaffold. Two children, an elderly man, a fruit stand worker and 3 other people got injured during the melee.

And again in Midtown, a pro-Trump march with his supporters walking with a 2024 campaign flag the size of a football got into a brief clash with Antifa protesters leading the cops breaking it up and arresting four people who were caught carrying tools and weapons. A man who threw a bottle of bleach at the cops and then ran away to the Bryant Park station.

And again in Midtown, two men made off with a bag of $8,000 in fresh bills that was left on top an ATM machine by a security guard at a bank.

And again in Midtown, a homeless man stole a bakery van while a 15-year-old boy was sitting inside and drove it on the sidewalk and crashed it into a building scaffold because he thought someone was going to shoot him. During the manic theft, the delivery man wound up breaking his legs after he held onto the door to stop the lunatic.

And again in Midtown, a man got hit with a stray bullet when someone involved in rumble on the street between rival gangs decided to settle it with a gun.

And again in Midtown, a woman threw an Asian woman to the pavement and punched and yelled at her.

And again in Midtown at the 51 St./Lexington Ave. Station, a xenophobic man punched a woman in the face on the 6 train and also called her a slur, blamed her for the pandemic and demanded her to go back to China.

And again in Midtown, a man got held up at gunpoint in front of an office building and robbed of a duffel bag containing $60,000 from a recent “business transaction”

And again in Midtown, a man tried to scale a too big to fail bank building during a protest in front of it and then fell on his ass and broke his pelvis and a can of black spray paint. The injured protester is a small business owner.

And again in Midtown, a man got caught shoplifting in 7/11 by a worker and he punched him in the face and called him a bigoted slur.

In Times Square,  a trash can on a subway mezzanine was set on fire and exploded as a cop was about to take a peek at it and as a woman and her two children passed by.

Also in Times Square, a man beaten and strangled his girlfriend to death inside a hotel homeless shelter after 2 years of abusing her and using her government financial aid to spend lavishly on booze and drugs. The man had 15 prior arrests, his most recent one in February when he beat the shit out of his father while he was sleeping in his bed and then stomped on him with his boots and and evaded arrest even when he kicked in the door of his late girlfriend’s mother’s apartment and wanted to freeload because police couldn’t do anything because she didn’t want him to leave.

Kayla Estevez and her boyfriend, Ernest Wright, are pictured in an undated photo. Estevez is shown with a black eye in this photo, which her family claims was the result of domestic violence.

Her boyfriend claimed she crushed her larynx by herself. The woman suffered from bipolar disorder and her brother’s repeated calls for help to city government agencies to get help for her were for naught. So where the fuck was Thrive, @NYCFirstLady?

Again in Times Square, a man yelled a sexist insult and xenophobic slurs at a woman and told her children that she was going to kill them. Then the lunatic smacked the phone out of her hand as she was filming him and kicked it onto the tracks.

In Greenwich Village, an app-hail driver got held up at knife point had his bag containing his wallet robbed and his car partition damaged by a man and a woman he tried to kick out of his car for not wearing masks.

Scenes Of Queens: Rockaway Boulevard Station, Art Over ADA Compliancy

Rockaway Blvd Station, twilight time

This post on the scenes of Queens focuses on one of the MTA and NYC Transit’s most recognizable depots,  the Rockaway Blvd. Station in Ozone Park, where the A trains go to and from Lefferts Blvd. and Mott Ave. destinations before going to their destinations in Richmond Hill and Far Rockaway. Although at times it’s mostly not recognizable as tourists and gentries keep confusing the two trains upon each trains arrival and wind up stuck an inconvenienced or causing irritable delays asking commuters if it’s the train going to the beach and airport despite the convenience of hanging timeline monitors or available MTA apps easily available on their thousand dollar cellphones.

But this isn’t about griping over oblivious commuters not paying attention to detail (even though it’s obvious I been waiting years to get this off my chest), the reason why this station is getting way belated attention is because of recent news that has relevance to what is not here and what is here at this very busy transit stop that is linked to about 6 bus transfers on Cross Bay and Rockaway Blvd.

Let’s acknowledge what’s here first. About 4 or 5 years ago, the MTA run by Governor Cuomo was renovating and upgrading dozens of stations while finally building the 2nd Ave transit line. And in certain stations of these long overdue infrastructure upgrades, the MTA thought, “hey since where already here and all this time to make our scheduled completion, why not put some art at these stations?”

And one of those stations is the one profiled here and this is the exhibition:

Behold

This was installed back in 2017. Besides the title which acknowledges the integrated bus/train transit hub in this location and conveyed by the web little colored lenses, it’s not really that imaginative or aesthetically pleasing. Besides, to the eye of the beholder, it doesn’t look safe to lean on and would be a big detriment in the winter time for those long train delays on the platform, especially for night owl workers who have to wait longer because of limited surface. But it actually does serve a purpose. It makes the sights of the boulevards more colorful if you peer through them or through the eye of the celly.

Cross Bay Blvd. before…

And after.

Now Woodhaven Blvd.

For decades, commuters waiting at this station were denied the opportunity to visualize the drab boulevards of Ozone Park and now thanks to the MTA, they can see it in a smudged and scratched rainbow of colors in a respite from watching the tracks from the east and west waiting for their arriving trains.

While the this station got blessed with this art, it’s peculiar that with all the time they were renovating this station they didn’t think to bless it for the less able-bodied and aged. Because after 6 years and a class action lawsuit against the MTA, this station is still not ADA compliant.

96th Street And Liberty Ave

Liberty Ave. and Woodhaven and Cross Bay Blvd

What could have been done way back when. Here you got two places to put down elevators serve the disabled and elderly by Cross Bay Blvd and Liberty Ave/Rockaway Blvd right by 2 bus stops.

Liberty Ave. stairs by the Cross Bay Blvd. bus stops

Liberty Ave stairs by Rockaway Blvd. bus stops.

All these harbingers take on new colors considering a recent report of how the MTA is slow walking the ADA compliance upgrades because of how they are spending commuter tax dollars trying to fight various lawsuits that forced them to finally make stations accessible for the handicapped and infirm

gothamist.com

The MTA has denied a request from a disability rights group to disclose how much it is spending in taxpayer dollars to fight several lawsuits claiming it discriminates against its disabled customers.

The groups — which include the Brooklyn Center for Independence of the Disabled (BCID) — claim in their lawsuit that the transit agency has violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by renovating stations without adding elevators and failing to maintain existing elevators. They also claim an overall lack of subway accessibility is a violation of New York City’s Human Rights laws.

Currently, a little over a quarter of the NYC’s 472 subway stations have elevators, slightly more than what the MTA agreed to after settling an accessibility lawsuit in 1994. The agency agreed to make 100 stations accessible by 2020 at the time, a figure it has exceeded.

In June 2020, BCID executive director Joe Rappaport filed a public request asking the MTA for the full amount it has spent for outside counsel. The agency, last month, denied the request on the basis of how it was worded.

“Please be advised that records are not maintained in a manner which permits practical retrieval because the MTA does not categorize or index payments made for legal services in the manner requested,” the MTA wrote in its response.

The agency released a document containing the retainer fees, but the dollar figures were blacked out.

At the MTA’s monthly board meeting on Wednesday, Gothamist asked MTA Chairman Pat Foye if he would release the dollar figure for how much the MTA has spent on lawyers fighting the six accessibility lawsuits. Foye said he would check with the Freedom of Information Law office about getting the numbers. But he wouldn’t commit to releasing them.

“I can’t commit to that because I don’t know what the issues are, but I will talk to the FOIL people,” he said.

The MTA did not return an earlier request from Gothamist for comment about how much it has spent on outside lawyers fighting the six accessibility lawsuits or why it denied the public records request Rappaport filed.

To make matters worse, this station wasn’t even included in the MTA’s 55 billion dollar infrastructure plan enacted by the embattled Governor Cuomo last year much to the chagrin of former NYC Transit president Andy Byford and enabled by the typically feckless and lazy Mayor de Blasio, who has been defiantly deliberately absent when it comes to transit system in the city he runs.

Even though Cuomo’s MTA continues to obstinately refuse to be accountable for their spending, they can’t obscure the fact that they prioritized decorative improvements over essential ones. Besides the stupid Rockaway Blvd. addition, the MTA’s costly decisions to deny easier access for the city’s most vulnerable commuters for the sake of art is apparent in stations in Manhattan like the Park Ave. South 28th St. Station east side entrance where they commissioned an expansive grandiose floral mosaic on the walls and the 6th ave 23rd St. Station where they commissioned an artist to install portraits of his dogs wearing human clothes. While the 28th St. Station does have an elevator on the west entrance (but no art), the prioritization to put sucky art on the walls at the 23rd St. Station instead of elevators is even more negligent considering that there’s a residential building for the blind down the block from this station.

It’s easy to see why the MTA would try to counter these lawsuits and hire the most expensive law firms to defend their abominable insouciance of the rights of their disabled and aged customers (and let’s not leave out parents with toddlers and babies in strollers who should also be called as witnesses), because they spent more effort making city transit more convenient and pleasant for instagram, tumblr, flickr and twitter by turning stations into ersatz galleries.

While these exhibitions make for great social media sharing, with more city and state funding lost on account of stupid MTA board decisions and inevitable settlements compounded with the low ridership from the pandemic and it’s aftermath in addition of steady subway crime, the future of NYC Transit is heading for a shitty horizon.

But at least the aesthetics will be nice.

New Bad Days 82: Homeless Man Murders Two Homeless People On The Last Stops On The A Train Which Inspires Overdue Presence Of Police On City Transit As Violence And Crime Continues To Happen Underground And On The Els; Man Gets Murdered In Cold Blood Trying To Break Up A Rumble Caused By A Gambling Den Robbery; Gang Gets Busted With Loaded Gats On Birthday Party Bus; Little Girl Left To Wander The Streets At Night By Her Mom; Cops Unload Over 30 Bullets On Alleged Armed Graffiti Artist; Queens Is Still Burning As Flushing House Fire Kills A Man And His Son And A Block Of Small Businesses Get Torched; House Explodes And Corporate Local News Doesn’t Sufficiently Scrutinize The Landlord For Making Illegal Utility Hookups That Caused It; App Bike Delivery And Car Service Workers Continue To Succumb To Holdups; Home Invasion Gun Point Burglaries, Muggings Of The Elderly, Hit And Run Traffic Killings, Street Slashings and Stabbings, Street Fights And Shootouts And Shootings And More Random Attacks Continues Upward Trajectories

Abandon hope all ye who enter here

On the last New Bad Days post, Mayor de Blasio was questioned by CBS New York’s Marcia Kramer about the undeniable subway violence crisis that has gripped the city and flat out denied it, while using his talent with words to passively aggressively insinuate that she was fomenting fear and reinforcing lies. And in the process of that response, told thousands of commuters that they were only imagining the proliferation of random attacks, street fighting, muggings and even attacks on police officers that were occurring and accounted on the news and social media postings.

The arrogant mayor mused aloud:

“We had an incredible and total disruption in 2020. Our entire lives were turned upside down, a global pandemic, a perfect storm – and we are in the process of overcoming that,”

Exactly a week later, the unthinkable, mostly to the willfully disconnected mind of The Blaz, happened in the most horrific and bloodiest weekend on mass transit in decades.

In Far Rockaway at the Mott Ave. Station, a man was found dead on the A train  with stab wounds all over his neck and chest, looking like he was slaughtered while he was sleeping on the seats. Hours later in Inwood at the 207th Station, a woman was also butchered to death on the A train. Both murders tragically took place at the last stops of the A line.

Other bloody random attacks occurred prior and after the slaughters at the 181 St. Station in Washington Heights on the same A transit line. Just before noon, a disabled 67-year-old homeless man got stabbed twice by a man on the platform when his assailant announced he was going to kill him and another man got stabbed twice while he was sleeping on the stairwell. Both victims survived.

All of the victims were homeless.

The killer, dubbed the “A Train Ripper” by the NY Post (which didn’t catch on) and got arrested later in the early evening after a massive NYPD deployment when cops found him on the street covered in blood and possessing a 6-inch knife with the handle wrapped in a bandanna. The man confessed to both homicides and the 2 other random attacks

https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2021/02/1.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=300

Like his victims, the culprit was also homeless and living in a shelter in Gowanus. He was also mentally disturbed and had prior arrests, recently when he was caught on the streets possessing a knife and baggies of cocaine last October. A few days before the random attacks and office, the city gave him a housing voucher and he visited his sister in Washington Heights to help him move, but went on a homicidal violent rage for in a 12 hour span on the A train instead.

Despite safety net aid from the city and many chances from his family, the culprit could not be saved. And his victims as well, for they chose to chance sleeping on the subway instead of city shelters, on the general presumption that they are safer down there.

After much outcry, confirmed and established fears from commuters and kin of the victims of subway violence, and the expected overdue reaction to only respond to an emergency when deaths occur, de Blasio finally ordered the NYPD to deploy 644 cops to the transit system even if in the deep recesses of his mind he still believes all these attacks are only anecdotes. But it’s not just him. The longest interim president (or interim president of anything) of NYC Transit “Train Nanny” Sarah Feinberg still proclaims the subway is still safe to use and like the Blaz, accused local news of hyperbole in their coverage of the chaos on the rails and platforms that are scaring commuters into riding bikes and driving cars instead, even though she believes and has demanded that the subway needs a thousand more cops to make commuting safe again.

It’s this duplicity exhibited by both the Mayor and Feinberg that will not ameliorate  the random and intentional acts of violence underground and on the Els nor will it instill confidence amongst citizens to bring subway ridership back to even a quarter of pre-pandemic levels. Not to mention to continuing perpetual failure of the city’s homeless and mental health services  that’s another long sorry ass story).

But at least we can pay the fare with our cellphones…

NYC Transit: No Homeless Need Commute

coppunchhomeless

Midtown, Manhattan, New York

One evening in the subway in Manhattan, a fascistic attack against civil rights by the NYPD occurred and the city and state of New York tried to cover it up.

According to an article in the digital publication THE CITY, a homeless man carrying all his possessions in tote bags was heading to Brooklyn on the 6 train going downtown. Suddenly, two cops walked into the car he was in and ordered him to get out because his bags were placed on the empty seats next to him. When the 6 pulls into the 51st Station, the homeless man complies and gets out but decides to run to the next car before the train departs.

The cops keep the train at the station and then order the homeless man to get out again, threatening to physically kick him out. When the cop tries to grab the homeless man, he refuses to budge and then the cop punches him about 4 times then he and his partner grabs him and ejects him from the train and kicks his only possessions on the platform. They keep the homeless man detained on the floor while placed in plasticuffs until the EMT’s arrive and strap the man to the gurney and roll him out. The homeless man wound up getting arraigned for felony assault during the arrest by D.A. Cy Vance, which carries a sentence for up to 7 years.

If it wasn’t for the video, this would have just went through the system and no one would have ever known about it, not even the news media. But the severity of this attack on this homeless man carries great significance and should give the general public pause on what the authorities are trying to normalize in the New Normal we all live in under the still existing pandemic and also what they are willing to do to maintain it.

The catalyst of this incident stems from Governor Cuomo’s decision on May 6 to shut the subway down at 1 a.m. so the trains could be thoroughly cleaned to prevent COVID-19 contagion from spreading after over 130 transit workers perished from the disease and multiple videos of trash strewn train cars occupied by homeless people went viral. Which meant that no one was allowed to commute in the subway until 5 a.m. On the day it was in effect, MTA and NYPD cops were deployed to kick all the homeless people out of the trains and the stations, leaving them all to take whatever shelter was offered or to wander the streets for a place to sleep.

When this altercation and escalation by the cops happened, the transit shutdown was already in effect for 19 days, and it appears on the video that the cops targeted the homeless man based on the MTA curfew and he was already violating the hardly enforced law of placing his bags on the seats which gave them justification for ejecting him.

But this is where those cops case turns to shit. Because when they started hassling the homeless man, it was only 12:30 a.m, a half hour before the subway closes so he must have boarded that train even earlier than that from wherever he came from. And the cops decision to order him off the 6 based on his bags on the seats was purely arbitrary and he appeared to be the only commuter on that car so he wasn’t really causing an obstruction.

As for the homeless man resisting to get off, he actually does have a lot of justification on his side. Because he was only taking the train to Brooklyn because he refused to stay at a shelter he was assigned to because it was too crowded and felt safer finding a desolate place out of the way to sleep for the night than to risk contracting coronavirus. To give an idea what that must have resembled, here is a picture of a homeless shelter by Bellevue Hospital where cops and city workers were sending when they kicked the homeless off the subway on the first day of the lockdown:

Screenshot_2020-06-23 bellevue-mens-shelter-01 jpg (WEBP Image, 915 × 610 pixels)

But the cops persisted anyway, they have orders to follow even though the homeless man was not breaking any law or even any pandemic guidelines. When he went to the other car he was still socially distanced from the other passengers and was wearing a face mask too, but only took it off to communicate and tried to plead with the determined cop, who actually was a bigger contagion threat because he didn’t have a mask on.

But besides coronavirus, the other existential threat is the dismantling of civil and human rights, which that cop displayed when he dehumanized that homeless man and his possessions like they both were garbage and exploited Cuomo’s and NYC Transit’s pandemic protocols to administer selective and capital enforcement on the most vulnerable people in society.

It’s taboo to make comparisons to historic events, but not only did this vulgar arbitrary brutality happen on May 25th, the day George Floyd was tortured and murdered on the street of Minneapolis during an arrest, this incident is really similar to Rosa Parks correctly refusing to move to the back of the bus because of some racist arbitrary law. It’s not wholly racially motivated because the roles of the races involved here are reversed, but it’s more like a caste system motivated civil rights violation. And trying to criminalize homelessness and poverty.

The homeless man was right to disobey. He did nothing wrong, he just wanted to go somewhere else besides a superspreader shelter where he could easily get infected. (Think about if he did remain at that shelter and then got on the subway after 5 a.m. )In a way, this is what the recently departed John Lewis said about making “good trouble”, which is why the guy took a risk wresting his hand away from being grabbed by the cop and being walloped, peppersprayed and having 200 pounds of NYPD on his back for 15 minutes or longer. Even Rep. Lewis had his skull bashed in for crossing a bridge for civil rights and social justice.

Watching this video and the subsequent effort to lock this guy away for years for just wanting to go home and for an assault charge based on a skinny man swatting away a fat cop’s arm and kicking the cop who beat him on his hand during the arrest (not known if it was accidental or intentional) reeks of utter crony corruption and an attempt to normalize a mild form of capital punishment, even if they were eventually dismissed. But after this incident and video, something about Governor Cuomo’s edict to lock down the subway doesn’t look like a conscientious task to remove every pathogen they can scour from the trains and stations but now looks like they want to ban the homeless from riding the trains outright. Who knows if the demented plan to make the subway accessible through reservations is still being considered in those MTA board meetings. Maybe primping NYC Transit for the upper class is not so farfetched considering that Cuomo is recently begging again for Fed dollars from DC with warnings of a fare raise for his constituents. Could a $5.00 fare be near?

Sure there were all those weeks of selfish and mentally ill derelicts (there is a distinction) that were inhabiting and making the trains ghastly unsafe with shopping carts and piles of litter strewn all over the floor including bodily fluids and feces when the trains were running slow and bereft of commuters during the high body count month in April, but they are not relevant to what happened on May 25th at 51st/Lexington. Those cops brutalized him, kicked him out and violated his rights to commute and fourth amendment right when they searched through his bags later on because he was homeless and they were given orders by the state to do that. That’s it.

As for the cop who beat the shit out of that homeless man, he got off without charges and consequences, aided by the belated wishy washy response by Mayor de Blasio who took a week to see the video and 2 months to be cognizant of the incident, which is no surprise after excuses weeks of excessive force utilized by the NYPD during the Black Lives Matter protests which are still continuing.

But there was and still is not much recognition for the homeless man, Joseph T. who works as a hairdresser by trade. Even though his ordeal should be a new warning about the ominous omniscient threat of becoming homeless during a new depression and a burgeoning police state that’s gradually being implemented that will enforce arbitrary but fundamentally baseless and unconstitutional laws against them.

Homeless lives still matter.

Thanks to Cathy for that last sentence.
