2019 ended with a rise in four major categories:
Robberies went up by 3.1 % (probably stemming from cellphone theft from peoples dependence on them for purchases and also addiction to texting and binge watching)
Assaults are up 1.4% (due to sudden rise of attacks based on anti-Semitism)
There were 766 total shootings a rise of 2.9% from 2019 and murders cracked the 300 mark in three years with a total 318 in the safest big city in the world
One evening in December, one murder would wind up getting international attention.
Manhattan
In Morningside Park, an 18-year-old woman, Barnard college student and bass player went for a walk in the park nearby her school and then was attacked and brutally beaten on the base of the stairs in a robbery attempt and was stabbed multiple times all over her body. The woman crawled up the stairs while bleeding profusely that got the attention of a patrol guard by Columbia University who just came back from doing his rounds. A butterfly knife and a phone belonging to her were found next to her body. The woman bled to death hours later.
What was initially described in the NY Daily News and NY Post as an attack by a group of men was debunked when the NYPD arrested a 13-year-old boy suspect that reportedly confessed to being an accomplice to the murder. The boy told investigators that he was with his two friends, both 14, and was just looking to rob people. He said they came upon the woman after his friends saw a man and didn’t bother with him and went after her. The boy then recounted his friend putting her in a headlock and going through her pockets then stabbed her when she fought back and bit his other accomplice on the finger.
One of the boys was also arrested but was released for lack of evidence, and the boy suspected of committing the murder reportedly showed up to the precinct for an interview but ran away and was out of state for weeks. The NYPD then put up his picture for publishing in the local papers and websites. He finally returned to Harlem with his relatives and met with the defense attorney and was subsequently not charged and released, as the boy in custody remains the only one charged with the killing even though he claimed he never stabbed her. Although he alleged in his account of the homicide that he did pick up the knife and handed it to the alleged killer before they both ran from the park. Then there is part where the victim bit the boys finger that led to the stabbing, so far no DNA report has surfaced of the suspect who just resurfaced. The lone suspect is still imprisoned in a juvenile facility as he awaits trial in family court in March, as the killer is still roaming on the streets.
As the search for the murder weapon on the parks grounds and ponds were fruitless, the NYPD has been extremely cautious in handling this. The chief of detectives, on his first week on the job, refused to respond on the progress of the homicide case (although he did reveal that the third suspect never did run away when he was brought to the precinct). In a combination of trepidation and stonewalling, it’s clear that the NYPD and prosecutors don’t want this to turn into a Central Park five case from exactly 30 year ago that will cost the city another 50 million dollars.
Mayor de Blasio’s response to the murder from his crooked mouth was moronic and tone-deaf as expected, as he remarked how unbelievable that a killing like that could have happened in this city and under his watch at that place (his actual sentence structure). But as usual with the pathological, habitual lying mayor; the facts on the ground belie those parsing words. Because Morningside Park is still treacherous to walk around there at night (and day) despite all the constant reports and press release boasts of lowering crime in the last two decades as robberies have rose 82% in the park in the last year.
In fact, just a few weeks before Tessa Majors murder in Morningside Park, a man was attacked inside a dog park by a man who attempted to hold him up at knifepoint, but the man clocked him in the face and the suspect ran away as the man fell down a flight of stairs after the tussle. Outside of the park a food delivery man was held by two men brandishing a knife and a gun and robbed his scooter, $60 and his cellphone. During the search of the park a few days after the murder, cops nabbed a man for holding up an app-food delivery guy and stealing his bike.
But it’s not just the usually clueless mayor to cite to blame, for Columbia and Barnard were not diligent enough to warn students about the rise in crime in Morningside Park, as students either had to hear from more streetwise students or presume it was safe probably because of the safest big city narrative being constantly bandied about by elected officials and NYPD monthly pressers and parroted by corporate local news media.
Speaking of the NYPD, the NY Post did a followup story on rising crime at Morningside Park with a student from Columbia who was attacked on those very same steps where Ms. Majors was slayed, when three boys surrounded him and robbed $120 off him when one of them flashed a box cutter at him. This was his recollection:
“They asked me where I was from and if I had any money. At first, I didn’t think they were threatening me, so I told them I didn’t have any money. Then, they showed me an open knife, so I gave them my wallet and they took my money,” Yu told The Post Friday from his Harlem apartment.
“I was surprised this happened to me. Before I came, I heard that New York is pretty safe, but I encountered these things and it’s really unfortunate.”
When Yu went to the NYPD to report the incident, he was told “several people” had been robbed at the same place “by the same teenagers” but cops couldn’t do much about it because “they aren’t adults.”
“When I heard about the girl who was killed, I thought it was the same group of teenagers, and I was scared,” the student went on, adding he plans to take the campus shuttle from now on.
Do you know what this really means? That if Tessa Majors survived the mugging instead of bleeding to death on the stairs and being that the accused are all minors, the NYPD would have done nothing to help her.
It means that the NYPD is culpable for the death of Tessa Majors.
As well as New York City and State for these misinformed and poorly written bail reform laws and quite possibly the unethical machinations that led to ratifying the eventual closing of Rikers Island. But mostly the culpability of Majors death and any recent past and current victim of violent crime is on de Blasio and the departed commissioners William Bratton and James O’Neill for continuing the blue wall of insouciance.

It kind of makes you wonder if these low rung criminals are able to stash this stuff in cubby hole spots in the Tombs, imagine what some rogue federal official would be able to leave behind for a mercenary killer to pick up and use on an international person of interest in a understaffed prison with exhausted and jaded C.O.’s like the Manhattan Correctional Complex a block away on Centre St.
