Mood of New York City right now. Powerlessness.

Previously on this blog, Mayor Eric Adams took (some more) time off his duties as mayor to act as a tour guide for a bunch of students where he called himself the greatest mayor in the world. In the days following that, more cops retired from the force  leading the NYPD to take desperate measures to increase personnel by lowering fitness standards during academy training. Homeless shelters seen a dramatic rise in overdoses to add to the already dangerous environment inside them, lawlessness, ultraviolence and death continues to ravage Rikers Island and the subways continue to resemble a subterranean lunatic asylum and crime dystopia that commuters don’t want to return to.

Most prominent of all, gun violence continued it’s steady incline on the streets of New York City even with Governor Kathy Clown Hochul and Albany lawmakers mostly symbolic bill and law banning guns in supposedly “sensitive locations” in the five broughs in response to the Supreme Court of The United States decision to overturn gun ownership restrictions in New York. Which of course shouldn’t even concern the ones using the illegal guns in all these places Manhattan Borough President “Marky” Mark Levine lists on his dickhead tweet. As every location on there had a gun violence incident on the fourth of July when over 50 people got shot and around 90 percent of illegal gun users winds up back on the streets again anyway and the allied authorities still can stop the guns flowing through the Iron pipeline. Same as it ever was.

The guns on the streets have got so bad that towns once thought as gentrified and areas about to be gentrified have seen the crime levels rise as high as they did nearly a decade ago. East New York got so bad that memories of the Killing Fields that once described it during the bad old days has resurfaced. But it’s not just Crooklyn that has got bad again, all the five boroughs have seen major index crimes go up nearly 40% from last year which strangely hasn’t discouraged market rate rent speculation. Which makes rich bros like this guy confident to brag about his perception of NYC’s dystopia that has somehow eluded him that he can make a tweet like this. Surely this also plays a factor of the rising stats of delusional and naive victims thinking the streets are safe in their high end yet grimy enclaves. But probably not as bad as the putrid arrogance of Albany officials like Mike Gianaris, Carl Heastie and Andrea Cousins who still stand by their failed bail reform law decision.

But the biggest feature of Mayor Adams broken promise failure to bring crime down is the constant sightings of critical mass of hundreds of reckless driving ATV and dirtbikes on the streets that happens on a weekly basis. For even after did a big demonstration and spectacle (of himself) crushing hundreds of ATV and dirtbikes with a bulldozer after waving a massive checkered flag on Staten Island, more dirtbikes suddenly materialized to distrupt Hizzoner’s debut of a behemoth 5G tower in the Bronx with a tattooed millionaire tech bro.

This shows that even on the streets with a cop mayor, the recidivists still have the power.

Manhattan

In Hamilton Heights, a bodega worker got into an argument with a woman who didn’t have money to buy a bag of potato chips for her daughter and tried to use an EBT card to pay for it. After he took the chips away and refused service, the woman left the store and came back with her boyfriend, who barged behind the counter and manhandled the worker and pushed him to the floor. Then the worker took out a knife and stabbed him in the neck and torso and then was trying to fight him and his girlfriend off who also took out a knife and stabbed the worker multiple times. The man then bled out and died after being taken to the hospital to be treated. The bodega worker also got stabbed by the woman multiple times during the tussle that continued between the worker and her boyfriend.

The cops arrested the bodega worker and then he was indicted for murder and was set up for $500,000 bail and sent to Rikers Island by Manhattan District Attorney/Accomplice Alvin Bragg (which he lowered to $250,000 because he’s so progressive) despite video showing he was purely responding in self defense after being forced to the floor by his deceased aggressor and the incredible data for bodega robberies this year which went up a whopping 70% from last year. This is mostly stemmed from not only the state’s bail reform law but D.A. Bragg’s notorious memo that also lessened the charges of most felonies, which includes possession and use of a weapon, which somehow Bragg didn’t want his edicts to apply to Jose Mesa. But it somehow applied to the dead man’s girlfriend who maimed the bodega worker whose wounds wound up infected.

Public outcry and solidarity demanding for Mesa’s release extended by common sense officials, the majority of real New Yorkers that are aware of the crime and blight on the streets and even Mayor Adams (who predictably drew back his condemnation in fear of upsetting the Democrat establishment), that Bragg had no further recourse but to dropped all the charges against Mesa and decarcerating him. But the damage to the dogged bodega worker had been irreparable as he couldn’t go back to his job and decided to leave New York to go home to his native Dominican Republic but at least he exposed the utter arrogance of the DA and the arbitrary stupidity of Accomplice Bragg’s memo which has elevated even more the solidarity demand for his termination.

Also in Hamilton Heights at the 137th St./City College Station, a 15-year-old boy stabbed a 14-year-old boy to death during a fight that spilled from the platform and onto the tracks. All over drill rap songs they recorded where they dissed each other.

Cops working the transit beat has seen a rise of attacks against them and Adams and Sewell (and clandestinely Phil Banks) wanted to have them work single patrols not long ago.

The cops spent 100 rounds to take the man down after he drew his weapon and fired first.

Here’s the thing about this incident, clearly this man was suffering from a mental episode, so why weren’t mental health aides or even violence interrupters accompanying the cops in the response, like the “B-Heard” teams that Adams announced and said would de-escalate situations like this months ago? Is it because he made those threats against high ranking officials?

A few days after the night rally, the bar co-owner continued to defy the pandemic  guidelines and regulations. Then he got confronted by the NYC Sheriffs officers after he closed and ran away from them, got in his jeep and proceeded to run over one of the deputies and drove a few blocks with the cop on the hood. The leisure revolutionary wound up getting caught and arrested and immediately released on his own recognizance after charges for resisting arrest, reckless driving menacing and vehicular assault for intentionally injuring a police officer.

The contrasts between between the two protest demonstrations after election day and the public assembly for this hole in the wall bar in Staten Island and the response by authorities are blatantly and stunningly egregious. This mild-mannered maniac proprietor/bartender runs over a cop and gets released in a day while people marching on the streets in the Villages gets subjected to ultraviolence from the NYPD for even a an accidental nudge to an officer. Plus the fact that this bartender wouldn’t have got away with this unscathed or even still be alive if he was a Black or Latino bartender.

Then there are the hundreds of S.I. residents (and some visitors from nearby states) clustering on a street in solidarity for the bar while standing on top of sheriff patrol cars and the most Commissioner Shea sends are four or five cops to guard Mac’s door for a few hours. No choppers, no pepper spray, no bike cops, no MOVE BACK MOVE BACK.

Mayor de Blasio’s doesn’t even has an answer for this. More likely he thinks the revolution in Staten Island is going to fade away if he doesn’t mention it. Just like all that police brutality he continues to ignore. Just like the stealth mass gathering events arranged by the Satmar communities in Brooklyn. All these indications of contagion that are in his face (and everyone else’s) even while speakeasy raves and bottle parties are getting repressed throughout the boroughs.

Then the mayor has the audacity to chastise parents for being too cautious sending their kids back to school even though a lot of them can’t, like the mother running small her business on the brink of bankruptcy in the Bronx. Yet some kook bartender is running a revolution in plain sight while co-opting the antifa-like tactics of political movements that he the Blaz ideologically agrees with.

Something stinks to high hell about all of this. To be continued in the next episode in Impunity City.

Your city.

Holes In The Ozone

Image

Ozone Park, Queens, New York

It was about a year ago that I wrote a post called Affixing A Hole, observing and photographing grotesque cracks and craters on the streets and storm drains and the innovation that gets implemented by the city’s Department’s of Transportation and Environmental Preservation to deter people away from the hazards. Now it’s 2020 and it looks like shit hasn’t changed a bit.

Strolling through Ozone Park I saw a familiar sight, another hole smack dab in the middle of the intersection on 107th ave. and 106th st. with a traffic cone being used as a butt plug so drivers can cruise over with ease, just like the pics I took in Manhattan and around here last year, except this time city workers aren’t even trying to thoroughly cover it up.

Image

Image

Since this has been the default method for remedying damage to the blacktop, our city workers are not even trying to see if it can fit. They couldn’t even shove this bitch down far enough.

Fortunately that’s not a busy traffic area, imagine if there was a hole even more massive and heinous with a big ass objectile vainly trying to obscure it’s hazard…

Imagine no more, because here is the intersection of 96th St. and Liberty Ave

Image

It’s stupefying. It really makes no sense why a dangerous blight like this isn’t immediately prioritized and promptly fixed.

Image

It couldn’t be at a worst spot too, the street there is a one way going north which makes right turns problematic and with the green light on the avenue you have to compete with vehicles usually blazing from the west from Rockaway Blvd. which intersects with Liberty. It’s also a veritable commuting minefield for pedestrians being that the stairwell  for the Rockaway Blvd. A Train is right there.

Image

It’s also incomprehensible that this temporary “fix” was done by professionals, because it looks like it was assembled by a bunch of concerned good Samaritan hobos who just passed by and was so disgusted that they had to do something about it. But no, the proper markings are there in spray paint of where they have to cut and dig again.

This crater has obviously been here for a while too. Because it’s a certainty that giant orange thimble (bollard, whatever) was standing upright and was easily knocked down by one of our city’s many careless drivers. If you close it’s actually two thimbles (bollards). Maybe Polly’s D.O.T. thought the extra weight from the one inside would hold it steady. No dice kid.

Actually, that knocked down thimble is confirmation that hole has been like that for a while because Polly’s D.O.T. has used metal city corner garbage cans to act as a deterrence to protect drivers from wrecking their vehicles, and the one that was placed back on the corner obviously didn’t do the job they expected it to do.

Pulverized.

Sure we’re still in an existential crisis of a global pandemic and economic uncertainty but this slacker ineptitude was going on for decades before there was a novel virus and frankly it’s still pretty expensive to live in the city despite an eviction moratorium.

And there’s the big ass factor that infrastructure repair and modernization was still going on because of it being an essential service. How else would all those ambulances be able to take all those COVID sick people to the hospitals and the cops able to get to the protests and engage in civil war with the demonstrators? So there really is no excuse for this shit. Especially even more since Mayor de Blasio decided to exploit the Black Lives Matter movement and painted a bunch of streets with the BLM slogan materializing his virtual signal tweets and yet the holes in Ozone Park still happen and get neglected on the regular. And get bigger and deeper too.

Strolling back to the base, I came upon the first sight and it looks like little Coney couldn’t hold the fort:

When it comes to road infrastructure and safety in South Queens, it still doesn’t matter and never even did.

Update:

Thanks to Queens Patch, who retweeted my story to Polly’s D.O.T., the Liberty Ave. crater at 96th street actually got repaired.

Kinda.

Looks like someone left, actually lodged a Capri Sun juice bag here for some reason.

Let’s see what’s underneath…

Shame! Shame on you NYC D.O.T.

Commuters are even afraid to drive over it.

Apparently, this pathetic Ozone Park Patch job is an established norm. Because this is what I found a block east on 97th.

Your city would prefer vehicle owners to get adjusted to this. Because the Mayor has a Black Lives Matter mural by Trump Tower to protect from getting splattered with paint.(And y’all thought he defunded the police.)

Affixing A Hole

051The star of the show.

New York is not only famous for being the biggest city in the world (by default, reputation and hype) but it’s also infamous for it’s potholes which manifest from time to time and also notorious for the tardiness to repair them. But decades riding (and at few occasions driving) in this big city of dreams, I don’t think I have ever seen the creative and quarter-assed way Mayor de Blasio’s Department of Transportation has displayed to remediate or even fix these blights on the roads and pavement. Especially with the usage of traffic cones.

Take the header photo of the subway grating. Clearly the hatch door is missing. Either it fell off or some enterprising derelict managed to rip it off and sold it for scrap. Or maybe by a MTA low paid contractor worker.

Despite how hideous and hazardous that looks, it doesn’t remotely compare to what the DOT is enabling or even ordering to temporarily remedy new road hazards on the streets this summer. Like this patch job on Central Park West.

007

Looks like something went wrong on this road here, which looks like it was milled and repaved not long ago.

008

Looking at this, I had thoughts of what else could be down there. Although I am partially glad that it the city affixed this hole, even if a rabbit won’t be able to make it to brunch with the Mad Hatter. Anyone could have rode over it and got a nasty flat or even ruined their wheel. Or maybe fall into another dimension or time. Other concerns I had was some sort of entity (or entities) that would rise from the depths of the netherworld like those shadows in “Ghost” or even worse a hipster version of Chutulu.

010

Take a look at that depth, that’s about the size of the standard foot and a half high cone that are frequently used. Usually the safety standard would entail that inverted cone and a few others to surround that hole and obviously for a work order to close the street to repair it. But now the D.O.T., which is ever so busy with other things like shutting down streets for film shoots and helping arrange fun festival weekends barring driving on weekends, is now just looking at these spooky craters and putting a big orange cork in it.

After placing a message on the city’s social media account, the void did get remedied as it got tagged for eventual repair.

058

They also stuffed it with what what looks like powdered sugar covered wet paper towels.

059

After this I thought for sure the city won’t be stupid enough to be this lazy and careless when the next hole appears. But I stood corrected and beside myself when I saw this asphalt buttplug again in Hell’s Kitchen.

050051052

This one was even worse. Fortunately this hole was actually not much of a danger to cars being that it was pass the crosswalk and away from the lane, but one could easily fall into the abyss walking, skating or riding on it. Especially when your staring at your phone screen like a stupid junkie.

To be fair, the DOT are still applying these orange cones properly for the majority of unsightly road hazards, when the holes are too big to use them as buttplugs.

Well, sometimes.

But the de Blasio’s D.O.T.’s shiftlessness is not limited to the lame efforts and solutions to warn citizens of road hazards, it also applies his Department of Environmental Protection for our dilapidated water catch basins. Especially the ones in the perpetually ignored neighborhoods in Southeast Queens.

Like this one here. This fucking wreck in South Richmond Hill has been like this for about a year. There’s suppose to be a big metal thing there on top. It’s a wonder how the city is able to lose parts like that and how mindblowing it is that they don’t immediately replace it.  Supposedly some homeless people or junkies find it (or pry it out themselves) and sell it for scrap too.

057

This gives the impression that the city contracted Fred Flintstone’s employer Slate Quarry to renovate it.

Then there’s this abomination:

060059062

I want to mock this with another cartoon analogy but it’s just too repulsive. Fortunately, it probably will get repaired since it’s on a corner and it’s part of the citywide renovation to make them better for the handicapped.

And isn’t it nice of the de Blasio’s D.E.P. to provide a one legged girder along with a taped orange cone? It’s the equivalent of tying a string on your pinky to remember something.

085

It’s not the case for this cavernous basin though:541

It looks like the D.E.P. noticed this too while they were still around town. So they had a spare leg, girder and orange cone to remedy any resident’s worries.

062

Surely, this was encouraging that remediation was on the way. But as Staten Island rock heroes Anthrax used to say…NOT!

018

Unfuckingbeilievable and rigoddamndiculous. The D.E.P.’s saw fit to blacktop patch the hole and reinforce it with some discarded wood and just removed the leg from the fucking girder and left it there. Yeah, that looks durable, schmucks.

Who knows what 99 cent store inspired dinky fixes this city will to do our slowly crippling infrastructure. Because potholes don’t discriminate.

Rest assured that these holes will get the standard safety cone buttplug treatment, as it’s now being applied to broken off parking sign poles like this one:

162

161

And citizens, if you see these holes, say something about them. The city’s social media accounts do respond fast. But if results aren’t manifesting fast enough, don’t be shy to be proactive and do it yourself. How hard can it be to shove something in a disturbing looking hole.

The de Blasio D.O.T. standard street apparatuses won’t be hard to find.
