The Rockaway Beach saga continues as the city Parks Department and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a joint statement this week reiterating their partnership in reinforcing the shoreline of the peninsula and continuing work on the groins in the area.
It has now become a bureaucratic battle as lawmakers are imploring Parks and the USACE to consider community concerns.
In a statement last week, the USACE said it would be “as flexible as possible with work schedules to ensure that the work does not pose any safety concerns for beachgoers.”
Then, it issued the joint statement supporting the plan to prohibit access from Beach 92nd to Beach 95th streets and from Beach 109th to Beach 111th streets from Memorial Day weekend until July 15. Full beach access will be limited elsewhere, as well.
“The Summer 2022 operational plan that we collaborated on allows us to keep as much of the beach safely open as is possible, with only six blocks closed to sand access and swimming as construction moves forward,” the agencies said in the statement.
U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Congressman Greg Meeks (D-Queens, Nassau) wrote a letter on Wednesday urging the agencies to hold a community meeting to publicly discuss construction plans.
“It is imperative that there is transparency and engagement with the entire Rockaway community,” the letter stated.
Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R-Ozone Park) expressed frustration with the “backtracking.”
“After weeks of playing the blame game, I’m not surprised that these government agencies agreed on a decision that does not support our residents, business owners, tourists, or economy,” she said in a statement.
“We’ve worked hard to make sure that the Parks Department will suspend rent collection for the boardwalk concessionaires from Memorial Day through July, but this is still not enough. We will continue to push for full beach access this summer, and closely monitor the project’s timeline to ensure the engineers meet the construction deadline of July 15 so that Rockaway’s shoreline can continue to serve as an attraction for all New Yorkers during the hottest months of the year,” Ariola continued.
In response to the proposed beach closures this summer by the NYC Parks Department, a group of Rockaway locals went to Beach 92nd Street, with construction on the beach behind them, to express their displeasure with the plan.
“We want beach access,” said John Cori, who organized the rally attended by around 50 people Sunday afternoon, “This is our beach access, we have it, we don’t want to walk 15 blocks out of our way. We can, but by doing that other people have to do, that means they leave our business district.,” he said.
The rally, originally scheduled for Friday, May 13, but delayed due to weather, came as a response to the Parks’ plan to close and partially close beaches along the Rockaway strip in order to complete jetty construction.
“We hope Parks hears this and listens to the community,” Cori said.
Those against the plan say the closures will harm the businesses on those blocks, particularly the concessionaires on the boardwalk who depend on the foot traffic, but also those further inland.
“We’re tired, we’re tired,” said Erin Silvers, who operates a business on Beach 91st Street and has also worked at the concessionaires.
“We need the beaches open Memorial Day. it’s possible. It’s possible because if we can work hard this community can do what we’ve done all these years…It’s possible, anything is possible,” she said.
From what it looked like on the first 90 degree day of the spring on the week before the “official start of summer” this Memorial Day weekend, the possible was achieved. For the fences that were supposed to deter people from going on the shore that were there for their safety were torn apart and beach combers made do with what little space on the sand there was.
The beachcomber rebellion was most glaringly apparent by B 91 street where the temporary summer shut down of the beach began. Two large stop signs were pried off and fencing was cut off to prevent access to the citizenry for their safety.
The red flags, normally a symbol of warning and emergency were reduced to being only a suggestion. The fence on this blockade was shredded so hastily and so bad that people had to duck to enter and exit the staircase. Making the inevitability of cutting your head open as much a threat as the inevitability of drowning.
Another entrance that was left open had about a seven foot drop to the ground
Heading down the ramp towards the perilously eroded shore was a sight to behold as people made do and set up their places with what little sandy real estate they can find under the omnipresent cranes and some plows left behind for the continuing reconstruction of the shore to save the peninsula from being submerged.
New sea wall dunes that are being constructed, which were about 10 ft. high, were actually also being used by beach combers to lay their towels down for relaxing and tanning under the sun’s rays.
But probably the biggest indicator of civil disobedience against the NYC Parks Department’s order to cancel nearly two months of summer, and also NYC Parks own insouciance and disinterest in enforcing the shutdown and concern for the safety of the public was this lunatic sight of a wedding picture being taken on one of the newly laid jetties. Which means that someone in NYC Parks or possibly NYC Council gave their approval to allow this display of gaudy exceptionalism.
Heading west on the boardwalk where other resiliency reconstruction was going down, more civil disobedience against the death of (half of) summer on Rockaway was more evident. Especially with the other new jetties as people walked and stood on the groins to enjoy the fresh salty air standing feet above the deep violent waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
While the absence of lifeguards gave people the impunity to perilously stroll on the jetty, an indicator of how difficult its going to be to stop them came when a lone NYC Parks dept cop rolled up and adamantly demanded the crowd to get off of there. Truly a disturbing sight considering how much Mayor Adams cut from the NYC Parks Dept. in the most recent city budget and the slashing of funds de Blasio did the year before (although plenty of that cash clearly when to fake open street parks).
Besides people milling about on the groins, there were more disturbing sights on what little shore there is that the Army Corps Of Engineers is using as a storage yard. Like this nuclear bomb looking object some folks decided to plant their umbrellas, tents and and chairs by.
Another odd sight was of an unaccompanied lone child sitting a top a sandy hill that was repurposed as a slide. While a corporate news correspondent was standing nearby ready to do a segment for Spectrum News NY1 only a few feet away.
Something about these sights resembles the prehistoric era scenes in 2001: A Space Odyssey, or even Land of The Lost as people sunbathe and chillax next to dinosaur like cranes. But what this actually resembles quite aptly is the dystopian wasteland landscape that New York City has devolved into from the effects of kakistocratic government incompetence from federal, state and city levels. It’s really mind blowing that when FEMA and the ACOE went to work to replenish the beaches from Far Rock to Belle Harbor, they never thought to place the groins down while they were putting thousands of tons of sand down and built the sea walls after the new concrete boardwalk was laid down only 5 years ago.
Since then and even more since my last post on the gentrification of the beach, the seawalls and the sands have been devoured by the Atlantic over the last three seasons including this one. Even on B 116th St., which was once speculated to be a major tourist and high end lux living destination, is going through another coastal resiliency replenishing as groins are finally being laid down. Although that beach is also still not closed despite all the signage and presence of cranes and boulders just feet away from the boardwalk.
Obscured by the lifeguard chair is the estimated time completion date: June 2024!
Then there’s Riis Park, which for a while was repurposed and reinvented as a consumer culture foodie and glamping destination has shut down a segment of the beach there from the public including caging up the dilapidated landmark bathhouse for the second year in a row, finally recognizing the erosion that has been getting worse that the National Parks Department and the former Riis Park Beach Bazaar chose to ignore for years.
Despite all these receipts of how fucked the situation in the Rockaways are, the top brass at NYC Parks is still bandying about how wonderful and peachy things are with the official opening of the beaches this weekend, conveniently announcing it on the still resilient shore of the legendary Coney Island boardwalk.
With news reports and nauseating photo ops and self-aggrandizing praise by Parks officials like this is it any wonder why Rockaway Beach continues it’s steady decline and why people don’t even give a shit of what elected officials say, even when their reps in City Council and Congress are going to bat for them to keep the beaches open despite the dystopian and hazardous environs. What’s even more interesting is how are lifeguards going to handle this. They don’t even have anywhere to sit and watch out for people on the water. And if beachgoers are that defiant to hold a fucking wedding on a jetty then what makes NYC Parks think they are going to listen to them, even to get away from the deep waters.
What people like Council Person Ariola, Congressman Meeks and Senator Schumer should have done if they are worried that businesses will be lost if no one goes to the closed beaches is to get a temporary fed bailout for them as well. Or maybe ask the developers and oligarchs that run NYC and see Rockaway as a big land grab cash cow to donate a couple billion or two to get them by this summer and hope the beaches get saved for the rest of the summer if these officials were really looking out for us. Literally.
Its been 10 years since Hurricane Sandy leveled Rockaway Beach and what’s resulted in the past few years to battle the extreme effects of climate change on the beach as been an abomination. In all honesty, the damage clearly is done and FEMA and USACE took too long to fix the beaches besides doing it wrong in the first place and the city was more concerned with gentrifying the beach than fortifying it.
And keeping them open on the weekends is only going to exacerbate the situation even more and cause more land erosion which will make the Rockaway Peninsula even more vulnerable when the next major category 5 hurricane or tropical storm comes.
He’s looting the city, that’s all. That’s what it is.
The he that is mentioned in that great article titled “Robber Mayor” is of course Bill de Blasio, and what he and his taxpayer funded shysters accomplished is probably the most devastatingly unaccountable act of wanton destruction that has ever been done to a massive public space under the farcical ruse of greenwashing climate crisis mitigation; that is the bulldozing and “reconstruction” of John Lindsay Park, otherwise known as East River Park.
While there was an original plan to improve the park to keep the water level from overflowing that caused major damage to NYCHA buildings across the FDR drive that was done in coordination of the community concern by placing berns against the highway’s path, The Blaz abruptly threw that plan in the garbage and memory holed it, then his minion city planners at the Dept Design and Construction came up with an entirely new plan that warranted the leveling of 1,000 trees and construction of a 10 ft platform of where the current park stands at a cost of 1.45 billion dollars. As expected, this did not go over well with the residents and community activists who have been adamantly demanding to stick with the original, less destructive and less expensive plan.
Compounding this situation even further was East River Park activists were trying to get FOIL documents to see who was behind the new project and what they received was full of redactions just like every other FOIL de Blasio and his crack team of narrative control minions released in the last 8 years.
When the day came to announce the NYC’s new East River Coastal Resiliency plan in April on his variety show press briefing, The Blaz read from his dais of cheat sheets and his honeypot fauxgressive council crony Carlina Rivera read from her laptop all the wonderful improvements the new plan was going to bring to the community that used the park, even though it will not be ready for over a half decade, which was another sticking point for residents and activists. After many months of protests by activist groups East River Park Action and 1000 People for 1,000 Trees, they managed to get a stay on the demolition in November, but it was instantly overturned by a city judge with close ties to the Blaz and his Brooklyn Machine political allies.
Shockingly, right when the contractors and the chainsaws started chopping the first of the parks trees, a state appeals judge ruled another stay maintaining the legal suspension of the demolition. At least it was supposed to, because despite the best efforts of the protestors and their attorney Arthur Schwartz, the contractor boss of the resiliency demolition took the court order and threw it on the ground like it was garbage right in front of the protesters and the cops.
Following this act of city-enabled impunity, the contractors illegally continued their path of annihilation. With the NYPD providing protection along the way while dismissing the Save East River Park demonstrators, the people they swore to serve. Acting as sentinels for the city’s and the climate change plan’s anonymous cabal.
While the demolition was scheduled for 7 to 3 in the afternoon, eyewitness reports by the determined activists saw demolition activity at 3 in the morning and even work happening on the weekend, a clear indication that The Blaz wanted this park razed in a hurry, by all means necessary. Fortunately for him that most of the local corporate news stations were virtually ignoring it save for FOX New York.
While still massacring the park in violation of the TRO, the most brazen incrimination reached it’s nadir when the Coast Resiliency contractors with assistance by the NYPD sentinels put up fences to keep the East River Park Action protesters away from the parks ampitheater bandshell and then they ludicrously enveloped the blockaded area with crime scene tape. Even though the contractors they were protecting were the ones committing the actual crimes.
Considering the legal temporary restraining order, Bill de Blasio not only gave the ESCR plan’s contractors the impunity to slaughter dozens of trees but he also enable the NYPD to take extrajudicial action to enable that contractor to disobey the TRO and protect them from the protesters demands and documents they were still trying to shove in their faces. In his 8 years of blatant brazen corruption, this was probably the most gangsta shit he’s ever done and this was only a week after he rewarded his indebted law firm’s developer client a new tower building to go on top of their blood bank. It’s also just as autocratic as his fascist vaccine extortion mandate. What The Blaz did by exploiting and weaponizing the NYPD to do the bidding of the anonymous cabal behind the ESCR mission was even a bigger misuse of his police force when he was using the NYPD Executive Protection Unit to chauffeur his family and allies around town.
Despite this corruption and destruction happening in plain sight, another state judge ruled to let de Blasio’s destruction of John Lindsay Park to continue, basically setting a precedent for the next mayor, being Adams, to overrule a court order by autocratic fiat and annihilate more trees as he sees fit under the false rubric of the climate crisis.
Even though the annihilation of East River Park has settled down after the non-stop week long massacre, evidence of what a crime scene The Blaz left behind are everywhere. Like the military brig fences that have blocked joggers and cyclists from using the park (which they actually just repaved with asphalt this summer!), making obvious the Blaz doesn’t want any lookie loos peering at the Cloverfield-like carnage his ESCR contractors did to the trees and green spaces.
Getting to see the East River Park crime scenes was extremely difficult, just like the Blaz and the shadow cabal directing this new “climate resiliency” plan wanted. The only way a curious observer could get evidence of the city’s ecocide was via the FDR drive and from the Williamsburg Bridge pedestrian and bike paths.
Immediately noticeable was the dance circle, with just traces of the art that once stood there. Now it’s surrounded by the carcasses of the 50-80 year-old trees and what looks like tons of piles of mulch.
Couldn’t help noticing that these piles of sawdust is not far away from where the Save East River Park protest groups have been gathering since the ESCR cabal’s contractors and de Blasio’s NYPD put up the meshed fences up. What’s interesting is that why aren’t these piles covered up with tarp? It isn’t like this contractor committed unsafe construction site violations before right??
Actually that contractor did and it was a big one if you lived and had a child going to school in Middle Village, Queens. Little more than 3 years ago, CAC Industries were employed by the city to fix sewer infrastructure in the area and left piles of lead contaminated soil extracted from the construction unprotected for weeks in a lot they owned which was across the street from a middle school and left it uncovered for 5 months. To really convey how dangerous this soil was, CAC actually tried to take it to a garbage dump first and the dump didn’t want it! Eventually CAC removed it, but all they got for their criminal negligence was a slap on the wrist from de Blasio’s clammy hand and here they are again being careless chainsaw mercenaries for the city’s shitty infrastructure plans and leaving their shit lying around exposed again.
Another spot where The Blaz failed to cover the heinous optics of the park’s annihilation was by the amphitheater bandshell. which can easily be witnessed by crossing the pedestrian/bike overpass by Collyers Rock Park (where it’s about to have it’s annual Christmas Tree Mulch Fest, which carries a grimly ironic pall right after de Blasio’s 24/7 week long massacre mulchfest)
The reason why this access to the East River Park was still available is because de Blasio’s beloved NYC Ferry has a pier stop there. Which is fucking hysterical considering that for all the urgency to platform this park by hook and crook to prepare it for flood mitigation you think that he would suspend that ferry stop, especially since there is only way out. But not when it comes to one of the vainglorious Mayor’s pet favorite projects, even if it’s another wasteful boondoggle catering to mostly wealthy city commuters and tourists.
But thanks to his oafishness, even ferry commuters can see the carnage wrought by de Blasio’s selling out of the city’s once beloved historic institutions.
Considering the demolition of the seating, it resembles as if the amphitheater was hit by a suicide bomber. What makes this even more of a travesty is the fact that the city actually allocated nearly 5 million dollars to fund the preservation of this theater only 5 months ago, which will supposedly include a roof. It’s going to be quite a miracle of physics and alchemy to restore the bandshell after the destruction the Blaz and the ESCR cabal ordered.
The police tape around the trees have seem to have lost their elasticity. But the NYPD is still hanging around to make sure the “resiliency” project doesn’t get disrupted ever again.
Which means the NYPD will be assisting the ESCR cabal’s contractors for as long as the East River Action demonstrators stick around and as the rest of the park gets destroyed. They will surely be here even when the landfill and the thousand new saplings arrived a half decade from now and probably when those saplings will finally reach maturity after two decades. Which is why now is a good time to see the cabal that’s behind this brazen political patronage land grab.
Meet HRA Advisors. The agents of the city de Blasio enabled to take over all your public spaces.
So now it’s quite clear from the massive revolving door The Blaz set up with HRA and several of the agencies he and they tainted with their presence why they he was so desperate to lie, obstruct, obscure and in a hurry to destroy to get the first phase of the “resiliency” project started. Mostly to cover his and his HRA government insider hires tracks in his final criminal act as Mayor of New York City.
Even more dismaying is that incoming Mayor Eric Adams has just hired the odious Maria Torres-Springer to a deputy mayor position for get this, economic development, showing that unaccountable destruction of parks and gardens for predatory developers and avaricious private equity firms will be commonplace.
But that’s how The Blaz has been running this show for 8 years. Like a fucking sociopath serial killer who believes everything he does is righteous and fair, almost like Dexter Morgan or even Walter “Heisenberg” White. His illegal destruction of East River Park exposed this and like those aforementioned fictional psychos he gives zero shits about it. What’s even more warped is that this sick mother fucker de Blasio actually funded three public parks days after his East River Park chainsaw massacre by giving 40 million dollars to restore a section of Prospect Park where he was hiding from the press and the public last summer (and where he ordered the NYPD to land a chopper there to pick him up), another 11 million for a historic stone house that already looked well maintained in Gowanus and 75 (!!!!) million dollars for a 27 acre park at a riverside inlet in hyper gentrified upper class Williamsburg (this coming after the City Council cronies approval of de Blasio’s developer overlord pals Walentas nearby River Ring luxury public housing towers).
The correlation between what de Blasio chose to preserve with what he chose to destroy with impunity is striking and in both cases he blatantly, stupidly and wastefully overspent. Nearly 1.2 billion for the Brooklyn parks and 1.3 for the destruction of East River Park. Surely in his deranged mind, he thinks this absolves him for his criminal actions as well as his favored advisors and their clients who stand to profit from the East River Park’s remodeling. Surely because of his broke ass, The Blaz and his tax boondoggle wife might have some personal financial stake in this as well.
After all this and 8 years of political corruption recidivism, this ratfucker de Blasio is going to run for governor surely with plans to destroy upstate parks and green spaces as well and he’s got the establishment Democrat party and corporate news media bolstering and coddling him as well. By then, NYC will officially have their new mayor in Eric Adams as the de Blasio chainsaw massacre, now legitimized by the courts, will continue its ecocidal path, leaving communities and children in the Lower East Side and the East Village without a place to relax, exercise, party and play for probably a decade (maybe forever if the new park will be privatized).
The Blaz has set the precedent for destruction by autocratic fiat and corporate profits. All your local parks will not be spared.
Washington Square Park, a green space of historic societal and cultural events and a pleasant environment to sit in solitude or socialize. A place where the likes of Bob Dylan and Allen Ginsburg hung out on the regular, nurturing the scenes of the nascent folk phenomenon and the beat poet movement that would change and influence music and literature forever. WSP would continue for decades to be a destination for all kinds of progressive demonstrations and protests, a place to play an intense game of chess and a convenient place to score a bag of weed, which continues to this very day.
But with the pandemic seemingly fading into the past after a year of collective seclusion and restrictive guidelines, a new history in a very short amount of time has unfolded and it’s one of upheaval and civil unrest and societal decay, with hard drug abuse being consumed in broad daylight and DJ ragers late at night even after the parks closing time. The new generation of denizens as turned the WSP into a governor’s ball festival every night.
Although the general consternation about how Washington Square has become a veritable den of iniquity, the park has been actually going downhill for about a year now since the pandemic began and was initiated by a sole homeless man name John Meshefski claimed and occupied the then cordoned off area around the fountain for about 2 months in the late spring and strutted around nude like he was the last man on earth. Not long after as pandemic guidelines were slowly lifted, NYU students started to throw the first of the weekend all night DJ ragers with zero repression from the NYPD.
This spring and summer, with pandemic restrictions gone, residents of the WSP area have come to find this nightly occupation of the park the biggest threat to the neighborhood since Robert Moses threatened to plow over it with asphalt for vehicular traffic. Which as exacerbated since Mayor de Blasio’s decision to defer his authority to the NYPD to take proactive measures and institute a 10 p.m. curfew which led to total chaos as revelers fought with cops trying to get back in and then got chased across Noho. The failure of that initiative has led to even more nightly baccanalias with booze fueled raves. Despite the claims of community vibes unhampered by police intervention, blowback from brazen park violating activity led to two people getting slashed during one of these ragers, aping what happens on occasion at your regular nite clubs.
Village residents fed up with the NYPD’s alarming insouciance after the failed curfew, the Chief Rodney Harrison and other high brass cops arranged a town hall meeting with them to tell them that their concerns would be addressed (actually they are complaints). The NYC Parks commissioner also gave a token assurance to the frustrated audience that the cops will have a more robust presence to tamp down noise and other illicit behavior. Meanwhile outside, a crowd of advocates for the hard partiers gathered and held there own town hall on the street and got into virulent debates with residential passerby.
Then when Friday arrived, all that was said and promised by Harrison or other high brass cops to bring back a semblance of normalcy to Washington Square Park yielded nothing. But there were other things going on during the day and night’s festivities that were interesting.
Arriving the official start of the weekend at 5 P.M. and got immediately hit with an infernal racket of some guy screaming and warbling into a microphone. Upon closer inspection and it was none other than the big Meshefski himself from last year’s New York Post chronicles of his occupation and naked frolicking. Mr. Meshefski, still homeless and clearly not of sound mind (although he can afford a mic and an amplifier) was singing and cursing up a cacaphonic storm for about 30 minutes until NYC Parks Police arrived and stunningly let him finish his a crapella routine instead of confiscating his speaker and detaining him.
This kook, who is homeless, happens to own a nice mic and amplifier.
Here is the Parks dept. Police letting him finish his noise pollution.

Despite the stunning lack of reasonable repression, the Parks cops strategy worked and Mr. Mishefski complied and shut his mic down and departed from the fountain, but he resumed his racket on the promenade when other people started blaring music full blast.

Despite the cacophony it wasn’t that oppressive if you walked to other spaces (although I’m sure the sound carries in the ether above and outside) and seen people selling their creative wares, people exercising their religious beliefs and bump into a few busking musicians. Or what our local elected leaders like to refer to as “vibrancy in action”. Not to be crotchety, but people ruin things when they turn things like enjoying a day in the park into talking points.
Anyway, to quote any regular citizen, it was all good.

Although there was hardly any shooting up or crack smoking (probably have to show up early in the day to check out Wash Sq. Hampsterdam), people smoking pot and drinking booze were being done discreetly just as during the days of Giuliani and Bloomberg time when there was a NYPD command post parked at 4th St. All in all, the scene at WSP was copacetic. As for the cops, their presence was astonishingly small considering what they told residents a few nights before.
And right at sundown, came the motor scooters…
Here come the wild ones.
Washington Square, party at ground zero all the time.

This gang would come in spurts throughout the day and night, riding around the fountain and by people sitting on benches with total impunity. The predominant demographics of young and youngish people at the park didn’t mind them at all, and some older holdover park goers handled it with visible jadedness.
Although obnoxious and disturbing, these bikers wasn’t the most outlier presence going on in the park, as there was something here amongst the free-for-all going on in Washington Square that actually stood out and explained all this commotion and illicit behavior was going down here.
Situated in the back of the Arch entrance, a bunch of chairs and a picnic table was set up by a group of White women and men and it was suddenly covered with dozens of pizza pies. It was a wonder how they thought they were going to get away with selling food without a visible license or permit but that theory went south after it was revealed that they were giving away pizza slices for free.
They were also giving away free water, clothes, books and menstrual products as we
According to the chalk bulletin and agitprop on the concrete, this charity drive was arranged by an organization known as WSP Mutual Aid which to be presumptuous is some kind of non-profit group to help the poor and needy.
Upon further observation, the people who were partaking in all this charity were not even poor people, but everyone that was hanging at the park at the time. Everyone under 30. And upon a little more observation, this charity org doesn’t like cops at all.
The scene around this gathering was also accompanied by a gaggle of photographers and some journalists, probably here to cover the potential clash between the people and the cops once the park’s scheduled closing arrived at midnight.
But at the moment darkness fill the sky, it got foreboding on the ground. High brass officers and cops showed up with a bunch of barricades and started cordoning off the Arch and part of the entrance/exit ways. It looked like they were going to honor the Village residents complaints and make a serious move the quell the festivities going on in the park.
Not exactly, what they actually did is made a fortress around the arch in order to protect it from vandals. Then all the cops went inside the barricades and stood guard under it and stayed put, so they basically and willingly put themselves into a pig pen. (Surprisingly no one noticed that at the time.)
After they did this, the cops stood down inside there and the park got more raucous and the bass got louder as a rager manifested on the south east side of the park and it was lit up. Literally, lit up.

As the minutes got closer to midnight, the park was still at peak vibrancy. The park denizens didn’t even notice or gave a damn about the NYPD’s presence. Amongst the cacophony of cranked music and loud chatter of the thousands of people in the park that night, the WSP Mutual Fund distinctively stuck out. Instead of packing up their goods as the parks closing time was getting closer, they maintained their makeshift community station and more people assembled in their space. Plus they ordered more pizza to give away for free and laid out more free clothes to grab.
What’s going on here in Washington Square Park is in all essence an autonomous zone. Everything that’s happening is similar in spirit to the CHAZ movement in Seattle. Complete with music performances and an independent marketplace.
The difference being is that its all being ironically monitored and chaperoned by the NYPD. Another ironic thing is the brazen and glaring issue that all this free grub and apparel were obviously not going to the needy because there were any homeless people around at all. The only people enjoying the charity was the revelry. The only thing this WSP Mutual Fund organization is doing is brazenly enabling the nightly rackets and after hours loitering.
Apparently, the only thing this WSP Mutual Fund and their donors and benefactors are actually contributing here is to make Washington Square Park a local and free version of a Bonaroo or Lollapalooza festival and a complete takeover of public space, which they ironically accuse Greenwich Village residents of doing all because they are disturbed by the noise and potential violence every night.
It’s 12 AM, do you know where your abolitionists are?
— This machine kills fauxgressives (@ImpunityCity) June 19, 2021
When the clock struck twelve, voices coming from the WSP mutual fund crowd were yelling “whose park, our park” and the cops stood at ease. (Well, actually they were just having conversations or texting and reading celly messages). And the noise in the park was still at a high level, but the atmosphere was somewhat a version of calm. But about 40 minutes later, a man decided to settle an argument with some other fellows by whipping out a knife and flashlight shaped taser, which caused a stamped of people fleeing the scene and wound up bloodying and bruising a woman who happened to be taking a stroll with a friend.
It may be hard to believe, but cops stepped out from their post and dutifully arrested the perp and escorted him out of the park and people returned to the park and resumed partying down after the harrowing incident. So what Chief Harrison has done with his promise to the residents in the Village here to mitigate the nightly ruckus was to have the NYPD act as glorified security guards of the Arch and glorified bouncers for the Washington Square Park autonomous zone.
It isn’t like Chief Harrison lied to these people, because this is the city’s policy regarding the contentious issue that is the WSPAZ; for Mayor de Blasio, who has been on a lysergic dementia high lately, is relying on his certainty that the cacophony and violence is going to find a way to naturally fade away. Plus this deranged theory is in lockstep with his deranged narrative that the aurally volatile environment happening in the park every night is confirmation of the city’s recovery. It’s no wonder why sociopaths like this event promoter is mocking the NYPD and the Village residents by telling them to move out and organizing boxing matches by the Arch.
They can try their hardest, but look at how many people are here,” said Olivia Stevens, an 18-year-old college student from New Jersey, who comes to the park “because the suburbs are boring and my friends and I have nothing else to do.”
“Nothing is going to stop us from showing up,” she said.
If there is any wonder where Police Commissioner Dermot Shea has been regarding this, all he can do is feebly vent because his boss The Blaz, who has been will not let anything disrupt his hashtag Summer of NYC initiative and will do anything to keep his delusory version of Fun City devolve into Fear City. So the Washington Square Park Autonomous Zone is going to remain as long as the nights are still heated.
In the Lower East Side at the East Broadway Station, 5 drunk men attacked a cop on the platform who was responding to a complaint a woman made of being sexually harassed by them. The fiends got dropped one by one as the cop kicked each fiend in the midsection as they approached and defended himself with his baton as they kept coming at him. The last moron tried to catch the cop on a blind side but he caught him and barely got a hand on him and the dumbass fell backwards on the tracks. This is the best police work in real time I’ve seen in years. Ultimately, the cop’s bravery has been all for naught because of the city’s laws stressing leniency towards public drunkenness and public urination AND defecation, these derelicts were processed at the station as drunk and disorderly and were released without charges despite threatening to assault and endangering the life of a police officer. The main problem with this is that the NYPD only initially charged them with vagrancy which gave D.A. Vance (who sucks at his job) no choice but to release them, even though it stems from his ruling that decriminalized subway fare beating. Somehow, sleeping on the subway platform and attacking a cop are seemingly also exempt from prosecution.
Police officer Syed Ali, is a combat Army veteran who served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and was himself profiled for being Muslim and detained by TSA officers a year ago at JFK airport which stemmed from the effects of President Trump’s travel ban. As for the five wastes of life, they are back on the street and in the subway although three of them will finally face assault charges after much protestation by the citizenry and Officer Ali’s fellow cops. Too bad citizens who are related to victims of excessive force can’t get the same belated justice.

Again in the East Village, a homeless man was found dead lying on the sidewalk.
On a crowded 4 or 5 train, let’s assume it’s Midtown, a homeless man sprawled on the entire bench whipped out his pecker and waved it around pissing on the floor like he was Jackson Pollack as the urine cascaded down as the train rolled. Then the bum went back to his nap while commuters seem to be adjusted to such a blight of humanity.
Queens
In Steinway, the sky above Northwest Queens and the South Bronx radiated with an encapsulating electric blue blast emanating from a group of explosions of transformers at the Con Ed power plant. Scaring the shit out of the residents of nearby Astoria and L.I.C..
After Con Ed released a statement reassuring the brief electrical fire yet encompassing, frightening and disaster movie resembling energy withdrawal was under control on social media followed by replies by citizens busting out with the film references this resembled (from Thor landing (mine) and the manifestation of Gozer) the fire was doused and everything was fine and normal. Until the corporate local news teams covered this non-stop for the entire weekend.
The only question that has not been asked during all that CNN-like pointless coverage is how this happened. There wasn’t a major storm that would normally cause something this major. The last time this happened was at the Con Ed plant in the East Village during hurricane Sandy. This might be premature and reactionary, but maybe…maybe the plants can’t handle all the power consumption generated from with the influx of new young professionals and posers that have populated NW Queens, crowding and inflating the rents in Astoria.
Just one street on Long Island City. This was from a year ago, they are finished and occupied. (JQ LLC)
And of course, doubtlessly from Long Island City, with all that tower hyperdevelopment, it’s an easy bet that too much energy is being consumed over there. What’s going to happen when Bezos and amazon’s gentries come to the area? (since the latter are already rapidly buying condos). Will the truth come out or will it be one of those #thingstheydidnttellamazon.

After he ransacked her dresser drawers, he continued to beat her up on her bed and continued assaulting her after she pressed her life alert alarm and screamed causing him to run away.
The victim’s building does not have functioning locks on the doors, which were damaged during Hurricane Sandy six years ago, and is only manned by security guards during the day and not after 8 p.m.. The senior citizen also left her door ajar because she was expecting her home health aide, which the creep easily took advantage of.
The prowler eventually got arrested and was unsurprisingly found to have served in prison twice before. He had the audacity to blame the mismanagement and gross neglect by NYCHA (even this guy is right about that) for invading the woman’s home and his brutal assault on her, even though some mook on the grounds encouraged him to go in that building to “get money” because the doors were unlocked. This makes it the third time an MTA vehicle was robbed in two weeks.
In Mott Haven at St. Mary’s Park, despite a city program to tamp down on heroin abuse heroin addict littering by placing receptacle boxes for the needles and other works has barely made a dent (or a jab), as needles and vials are still being disposed on the grounds in full view by the junkies, who according to one honest addict observed that those boxes give them permission to shoot up with impunity.
At St. Marys, over 20,000 needles were found on the grounds where citizens and families go and kids play. The grounds that Mayor Big Slow de Blasio exhorted to critics that would not be ceded when he announced the 60 million dollar social engineering policy to place 60 kiosks to place at 3 parks including this one. That’s 1 million dollars for each smack waste basket and they are only being utilized by junkies barely above 10% of the time. Not in Central Park or Carl Schulz by Gracie Mansion. Not even by Prospect Park which is near his own home in Park Slope.
After acknowledging the failure, Mayor Big Slow and NYC Parks decided to go back to the city largesse again for $350,000 and hire six big hearted individuals to clean up the dope fiend detritus and another 450 large for mental health workers to aide junkies to rehab centers. NYC Parks already has over 50 people cleaning up these biohazard materials. So that algae that is amassing at your area parks lake is going to have to wait.
To be fair, St. Mary’s is actually an ideal place to implement a needle disposal program, despite how stupid it is, for that park has been a junkie haven for decades. And it’s understandable why addicts don’t want to go near those boxes for fear of the cops popping up to cuff them, but mostly because they are too loaded and and too weak to clean up after themselves. But it’s clear they have nothing to fret because they continue to shoot out in the open even though the NYPD presence at St. Mary’s had spiked (pun intended) after a NY Post reporter witnessed five of them getting doped up.
As for the citizenry and the children of Mott Haven who frequent St. Mary’s, they are collectively pretty much jaded and sick of hearing the empty declarations and promises from Mayor Big Slow and also say they haven’t seen any punitive actions or even the slightest hassle towards the junkies from the cops as well. The only reported recent action and admonishment by police to move along was toward a father and his son, who were in the park riding their bikes and sat by a bench where one of those needle boxes. Surely knowing how bizarre that look, the cops also hassled 3 addicts and searched them in a token act of law enforcement. It’s like the NYPD is enforcing Murphy’s Law to manage this societal malaise.
The NYPD was thinking of their safety of course and also not to disrupt de Faustio’s social engineering debacle, but for the law abiding people and innocent kids it’s just another blight they have to get adjusted to as their towns slowly become “opportunity zones” for oligarchs and wealthy developers and investors to profit from.
One last thing. The cops are treating the Bronx junkies with kid gloves while they had no problem slapping the cuffs on thousands and thousands of Black and Puerto Rican people for smoking and possessing pot during de Faustio’s 5 years corrupting City Hall.

The truth in right and wrong The boundaries of the law You seem to miss the point Arresting for a joint?
Phil Anselmo, Pantera
Well, looks like the Mayor finally got a modicum of sense or is just trying to upstage his confirmed rival Gov. Cuomo in a battle of superficial progressive activism, now that he has ordered the NYPD to stop arresting people for smoking pot in public weeks after he announced his experiment to provide safe spaces for shooting and possibly selling smack as the NYS health dept. finally completed it’s study for the inevitable legalization of the glorious weed.
Although this decree still comes with a favorable sop to the NYPD to keep up shakedowns in certain predominantly Black and Hispanic communities or areas under and prospective gentrification with supposed “carve-out” arrests to catch potsmokers who are suspected of breaking probations, having warrants against them or are currently on parole. Which just seems to be an redefined and upgraded version of the unconstitutional tactic of “stop and frisk”
Although this is a genuine sign of progress that will truly benefit the city with new businesses, new jobs and massive revenue and will be less stress for pot smoking citizens and cops equally, the city and it’s law enforcers still have to maintain some control and policy management over more serious and harder drugs and it’s consumers.
In six parks in the Bronx, the city has installed syringe deposit boxes for the junkies frequenting them for shooting up after finding up to 5,000 used needles discarded by on the lawns, lots, paths, benches and playgrounds.
Although this seems like a good idea it’s extremely naive. Junkies not only don’t have the energy to get up or muster the consideration to clean up their works after they shoot up and wallow in their blissful state, but like most drug users are way too paranoid to be seen disposing their needles in receptacles. And it will not lessen parkgoers anxiety to see the sight of junkies disposing their shit properly as when they see the needles just lying around. It’s better for NYC parks to hire sweepers. Meanwhile, a parking lot slated for more community disrupting gentrification tower development near one of the parks that has received needle waste baskets and kiosks has become a junkie haven.
Then there are other dangerous products hitting the streets because of demand and old school favorites too, like in Mount Hope in the Bronx three men were busted selling packets of the elephant tranquilizer Carfentanil for distribution to compete with the fentanyl heroin market and in Washington Square Park, just days after the mayor’s ruling people are smoking crack in full view in front of park goers.
And most disturbingly and distressing in Bed-Stuy, up to 25 3087 people were found walking in a coma-like daze and lying on the concrete after overdosing on the synthetic garbage low end marijuana substitute K-2, nearby the same bodega that was caught selling the stuff back in 2016 when 33 people were zombie marching and lounging on the pavement on Broadway and Myrtle Ave . It is suspected by a councilman Robert Cornergy that it is being sold on the street by runners/hoppers, whose suspicion was confirmed when cops busted 8 people 15 people for selling it in baggies labeled “scooby snax” (zoiks!). Another 3 catatonic fake pot smokers were found lying the streets of Crown Heights.
The fucked up thing about K-2 and it’s popularity is that even if pot becomes legal, this shitty toxic product will not go away for it will be the only thing poor drug users can afford if you factor what the prices will be when pot shops open up when those aforementioned area will be fully gentrified.
There is also the unaddressed and inevitable high profile return of cocaine, which will not be a shock since it’s the preferred upscale drug of choice of frivolous big spending young adults, of whom this city is building it’s economy on with all the high rise tower pestilence and proliferation of bars and clubs in Manhattan and the coastal towns and suddenly niche slightly eastern areas of Brooklyn and Queens. As NYC’s department of health is taking preemptive action with a campaign focusing on cocaine laced with fentanyl and sending aides to bars on the high end and notorious Hells Gate on the Lower East Side to warn patrons to be careful when they illegally buy and snort blow on drink coasters.
Unfortunately this concern may have already hit a snag because at a “restaurant” and bar called No Fun, name and album font stolen from The Stooges in the East Village, a woman died in a bar/restaurant at 9 p.m. after coming in loaded on coke and booze. (Night Mayor Ariel Palitz, where are you??)
Now onward to the boroughs five.
